Jan. 5, 2006 - ANDY SMITH 4-3 RAY CARVER in World Dart Tournament

Posted in darts

ANDY SMITH 4-3 RAY CARVER
(1-3, 3-2, 3-1, 1-3, 1-3, 3-2, 4-2)

ANDY SMITH came from behind to overcome American Ray Carver to move into round three of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The qualifier from Warwickshire ended Colin Monk's hopes in the first round and then hit back to knock out Carver in a ding-dong battle.

Carver won the first set 3-1, before Smith hit back to take the next two and move ahead in the match.

American star Carver lifted his game and took the next two sets 3-1 but Smith hit three maximum 180's to level matters and take the game into a decider.

Carver moved himself 2-1 up, but Smith crucially won the fourth leg and then took out a 136 finish to move ahead before taking the sixth leg with a 96 checkout to seal victory.

"It was hard work, a lot harder than I expected," admitted Smith. "I didn't start well and found myself a set down.

"It was see-saw, it went 2-2 and then 3-2 to him and he was on a shot to win it but I took out 120. It was a real tough game.

"I was really happy with the way I controlled myself, played steady and let him make the mistakes.

"I've had some hard games in my career and that is one of the hardest.

"It's not very often you're on TV and playing for such big money - I've won £8,500 now. I cut logs for a living and I'd have to cut a lot at £50 a ton to earn that much!"

Jan. 5, 2006 - GARY WELDING 4-2 JOHN KUCZYNSKI ending American Dreams!

Posted in darts

GARY WELDING 4-2 JOHN KUCZYNSKI
(1-3, 3-2, 0-3, 3-1, 3-1, 3-0)

GARY WELDING'S dream debut at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship continued as he became the first player to move into the quarter-finals, with a 4-2 win over American John Kuczynski.

The qualifier from St Helens, making his first appearance at the Circus Tavern this year, knocked out world number one Colin Lloyd in the first round and ended Erwin Extercatte's hopes on Boxing Day.

He ended the American Dream in Purfleet by coming from 3-1 down to knock out Kuczynski on the same day that his compatriot Ray Carver was also eliminated.

Despite losing the opening leg, Kuczynski took the first set and led in the second before Welding managed to find his range on the doubles.

The 42-year-old levelled matters at 1-1 but was again wayward in the third as the American number one edged back in front.

Welding then won six legs from the next eight to move 3-2 up and put himself within touching distance of the last eight.

He then made Kuczynski pay for his own missed doubles in the sixth set, taking three straight legs to book his quarter-final place.

"It's a dream," said Welding. "I struggled a bit at times and I know I've got my 'A Game' in me somewhere.

"Eric Bristow said that sometimes you have to 'win ugly', but I'm in the quarter-finals now and confident of going even further."

Kuczynski admitted: "I missed too many doubles but I'll be back.

"I came here expecting to win it and I'm confident about my future."

Jan. 5, 2006 - PHOENIX - Allen Iverson wants to be a part of the U.S. basketball team for the 2006 world championships and 2008 Olympics, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said.

Allen Iverson wants to be a part of the U.S. basketball team for the 2006 world championships and 2008 Olympics, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said.

Colangelo met with Iverson on Wednesday before the Philadelphia 76ers played the Phoenix Suns.

"He wants to win a gold medal," said Colangelo, the chairman and CEO of the Suns. "He said that very clearly. He said if asked, he would be honored."

Colangelo, solely in charge of developing the pool of players invited to the team's training camp, plans to meet later this week with Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade and Tim Duncan. The Suns host the Miami Heat on Friday night and the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

Colangelo said he had never spoken at length with Iverson and wondered how the talk would go.

"He looked me right in the eye and said it would be an honor for him," Colangelo said. "It was a very positive experience."

Iverson was co-captain and the leading scorer on the U.S. team that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

"I want to play," Iverson said after Wednesday's game. "Obviously we didn't get it done the first time I was a part of that team. If God blesses me with another opportunity to try it, it would be an honor. I would have a second shot at fulfilling one of my goals."

Colangelo, named head of USA Basketball after the team's poor performances at the 2002 worlds and 2004 Olympics, has made it clear that the U.S. team would not be a collection of superstars hastily put together.

Instead, he wants a group, including role players, that would make a three-year commitment to participate in the camps and form a cohesive team for the worlds this year in Japan and the Olympics in Beijing.

Colangelo said he planned to announce the first batch of players for the camp by the NBA's All-Star break in mid-February.

Colangelo indicated that the Suns could have two players invited -- Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire. Colangelo called Marion "the most underrated player in the league." He also said that Stoudemire, out for at least four months following knee surgery, agreed to make the three-year commitment "about 30 seconds" into their conversation.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski will be the team's head coach. His assistants are Suns coach Mike D'Antoni, Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan and Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim.

Jan. 5, 2006 - Young Carries Texans Over USC in Rose ball

With the national title down to a final play, fourth down and 5 yards to go, Young scrambled untouched for an 8-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left and the No. 2 Longhorns stunned No. 1 Southern California 41-38 in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday night

"Do whatever it takes," Young said.

He did it all - and made sure that Texas was second no more to USC and its Heisman Trophy twins, Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart.

It was the ultimate revenge for Young, the bitterly disappointed runner-up to Bush for the Heisman Trophy last month.

At the Heisman presentation, Young had a blank stare and reluctantly clapped after he lost in a landslide to Bush. After winning the biggest team prize of all, he beamed with a satisfied smile, hugging anyone he could find.

On a night when he ran for 200 yards and passed for 267 more, Young capped a performance that Texas fans will remember forever by scoring his third TD and running for a 2-point conversion to end Southern Cal's 34-game winning streak and deny the Trojans an unprecedented third straight national championship.

"It's so beautiful," Young said as he received the MVP crystal. "Don't you think that's beautiful? It's coming home all the way to Austin, Texas."

The Longhorns were a unanimous No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 and won the Bowl Championship Series title with the victory in the Rose Bowl.

"This is what it's all about, 41-38 in the final game," said Leinart, the Trojans quarterback and Heisman winner a year ago. "You couldn't ask for anything better. This was a great football game. We gave our hearts, they gave their hearts, and they came out on top."

The Longhorns (13-0) won their 20th in a row. USC (12-1) lost for the first time since a triple-overtime defeat to California on Sept. 27, 2003. Its 34-game winning streak is tied for sixth all-time in Division I-A, behind Oklahoma's 47-game run from 1953-57.

"Well, we couldn't stop them when we had to," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "The quarterback ran all over the place.

"This is their night," he said. "It's wonderful doing what we've been doing. We didn't get it done."

After the trophy presentation, Young draped his arms around two teammates' shoulders and the three of them sang "We are the champions."

Later, he ran into Leinart and Bush as the USC players walked past the Texas locker room and greeted each with a hug.

Texas coach Mack Brown took Bush aside near the entrance to the locker room and told him, "I thought it was a classy game. Nobody could stop anybody."

When the game was over, Texas players streamed onto the field with the Longhorns' first outright national title since 1969. Young stood on the sideline in a sea of falling confetti, arm raised toward the crowd, and senior tackle William Winston unfurled a big, white Longhorns flag.

While the Longhorns' band blared "The Eyes of Texas" in front of a sea of burnt orange, the USC players looked startled. Some put their hands to their heads, while others dejectedly took off their helmets.

Said Leinart: "I still think we're a better football team. They just made the plays in the end."

Leinart did his part in his final college game while Bush was less than his best. Leinart passed for 365 yards, and his 22-yard TD strike to Dwyane Jarrett put USC ahead 38-26 with 6:42 left.

Earlier, Bush soared into the end zone on a 26-yard run, part of his 82 yards rushing. He also had 95 yards on six catches - and a boneheaded lateral that swung momentum Texas' way in the first half.

"It's been a great run. We've done some special things," Bush said. "I don't think we should be ashamed about anything."

In a game that produced more than 1,100 yards, a defensive stand was key for Texas.

On fourth-and-2 from USC'S 45-yard line with 2:09 left, Carroll gambled. He decided to try to seal the game with his vaunted offense, dubbed by many the best ever in college football, and keep the ball out of Young's hands.

"We knew if we got that fourth-and-2, that was going to be the ball game," All-America defensive tackle Rod Wright said.

But when LenDale White came up inches short, Wright and other Texas defenders jumped in the air and charged off the field as Young trotted on.

"If you make that first down, you're squatting on the football to win the game," Carroll said. "We just missed it. By what - two inches?"

Young stood in the pocket and passed the Longhorns to a first-and-10 at the 13. After a 5-yard scramble, he misfired on two passes to set up fourth-and-5 at the 8.

The Trojans brought pressure, as they did all night, but Young slid away from it and looked for a receiver. Instead, he found a lane and raced to the right pylon.

"I went through all my progressions, so I just took off with it," Young said.

The Longhorns erupted. One pounded the turf as he lay face down on the turf, while the shocked Trojans futilely looked toward officials, hoping they'd say Young stepped out of bounds.

USC had one last chance, and it wasn't a good one. On the last play of the game from just beyond midfield, Leinart's pass sailed high over Jarrett's head around the 25.

With two of the most storied programs in college football, teams seemingly destined to decide the national title this season, the Rose Bowl was dripping with pageantry and tradition. Tommy Trojan atop Traveler galloped along the USC sideline. Meanwhile, big ol' Bevo, the Longhorns' beloved steer, guarded the Texas tunnel.

The Trojans think of the Rose Bowl as their home away from home - no team has won the "Granddaddy of Them All" more often. But a Texas-sized contingent of Longhorns fans turned half the hallowed stadium burnt orange and was loud enough to force USC into at least one penalty for delay of game.

Texas led 16-10 at halftime, but being behind after two quarters was nothing new to the Trojans. Four times this season they trailed after 30 minutes and regained control in the third quarter.

And that's what they did again, forcing a punt by Texas and driving 62 yards on seven plays with White finishing with a 4-yard run that made it 17-16 USC.

Young, back at the site of his breakout performance last year against Michigan, responded with a 14-yard touchdown run, reaching a long arm toward the pylon to make it 23-17.

On fourth-and-1 from the Texas 12, White burst through the line for a touchdown, his third of the game that made it 24-23.

On the second play of the second quarter, Bush bolted down the middle for 37 yards with a screen pass, but inexplicably pitched the ball sideways to unprepared teammate Brad Walker. Texas All-America defensive back Michael Huff fell on the loose ball, and Bush came off the field with his hands on his helmet, shaking his head, looking as baffled as anyone by what he had just done.

Texas turned the break into its first points, with Young passing and running into USC territory and David Pino booting a 46-yard field.

When Young went no-huddle, he found tight end David Thomas a couple of times and showed Bush how to pull off a late pitch.

Young went 10 yards on an option keeper, and just before his knee touched turf - or so it seemed - chucked the ball to Selvin Young, who took it the final 12 yards for a score and Texas' first lead, 9-7.

Replays appeared to show the quarterback's knee hitting the ground before he let go of the ball, but with Carroll standing way out on the playing field, officials never stopped play for a review.

Less than 2:30 later, Texas was on the board again as Ramonce Taylor, known as Bush Lite around Austin, ran 30 yards to make it 16-7.

This was one of the most exciting games I'd ever watched.  One hell of a great game!

Dec. 15, 2005 - World Series of Darts Predictions... for Round 2 Qualifiers.

Posted in darts

PS.  These American Darters here assume that a few more unknown American Players don't make their presence known for this tournament.  People such as Kreiger, Russell (who is top 5 by far if he shoots - American), Sawyer (excellent 01 player who plays daily although skips some tournaments), Peter Morrison, plus quite a few others.  The Americans positions probably will not be Johnny K or Darren Young but for simplicity sake we'll taker those 2 names.  I've even beaten Young multiple times and I'm not even going to put my own name in the mix.  The pressure is on and the pressure will be felt by Young and Johnny K to much.  Tommy Curtin could even slide into the mix if he is shooting enough to get steady darts.  Their will be a ton of people from US-Region 5 Playing in for spots from the most saturated area in the NorthEast.  Anyone could walk through and qualify from their and then pull an upset.  Coming from the area I know about a dozen shooters who can play 01 as good as anyone of the top 5 US rankings who aren't even their to pick from.

Colin Lloyd (1, Eng) V Darren Webster (32, Eng)

Dec. 15, 2005 - Recently was elimintaed from the Super A dart Playoffs

Posted in darts

Recently our dart team lost after having a personal best season winning 14 of 14 crickets and winning all 14 singles.  I think I won the MOP award this season for the 1st time in Super A.  It had been a while since I shot as much as I have recently.  Tom Sawyer's team knocked us out of the playoffs.  They had a solid team that ended our season.  We shouldn't have lost but my team still lacked the experience of playing a lot of playoff matches and bit the dust early.      It is probably the last time I'll ever go undefeated as my playing days are numbered.  I'm still thinking of attending the largest shoot in New England History at the World Series of Darts tournaments.  I don;t expect to win but I know I could knock of a few good players along the way.  We will be qualifying for the top 16 American players.  Their are quite a few I can beat out and I know If I shot well I could beat anyone that showed up atleast once during the qualifier.

Nov. 16, 2005 - Glenn Jones Rated best Dart Player on Earth!

This article is dedicated to a man who recently past away on 11/14/05 known as Glenn Jones.  Glenn Jones was an above Average Dart Player who shot in Both The Seacoast Dart Association and Recently in the Carriagetown Dart Association.  He was an excellent A shooter who was more about haing fun and making friends than anything else.

Glenn Jones treated me like his best friend.  Eager to please, and always there when you needed him.  In 2004 I started a dart team in Amesbury, MA in a Professional Money League in which I was loaded with shooters, but as the season started we ran into problems getting decent players.  My friend Rob said he could find me 2 decent shooters who would not win a lot but where better than noone and we agreed to take them on.  Glenn was one of them.  He was my best alternate, and best player rolled into one.  Whenever he shot his darts he shot upto his opponents and gave us our needed points to get the wins!  He shot great right up to the very alst week of playoffs.  We will always remember Glenn who threw round after round in the hardest division I ever shot in and continues to come out on top.  He was a true friend who would never leave you a man down.  Today however we where all saddened to hear the news of his death from my fellow teammates and friends.  Rest In Piece My Friend, We all Love You, and wish your family Well.  We could not ask you for a better friend.  We wish your family the best of luck and our deepest Deepest sorrows .

Today I post my 1st Blog on behalf of our Friend Glenn Jones.  May you always be remembers as a great father, and most importantly as a great man!  We love you Glenn,

Sniffles.
